Mary Jane Nissley

Mary Jane Nissley, 82, of Mountville, went home to be with her heavenly Father on Sunday, January 5, 2025. She was born in Lancaster, the second daughter of Roy R. and Ruth G. Newcomer Nissley. She was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ and a lifelong member of Habecker Mennonite Church. Mary Jane served as a Sunday school teacher, attended Manor Sewing Circle and was involved in helping in the relocation of refugee families from Vietnam and Thailand.

Mary Jane was employed at the Herr's Fruit Farm and Sears before serving as a volunteer for two years at Northern Tier Children's Home, Potter County. She then worked at Fulton Bank for 39 years. She volunteered at the Columbia Re-Uzit shop as a cashier and treasurer. In her retirement she knotted many comforters for MCC and UNTO and enjoyed cross-stitching quilt squares for MCC and other ministries. Janie enjoyed reading, traveling to the mountains with family, trips to Praise Fest in Tennessee and treasured spending time with friends and family.

We will miss her most generous spirit, her love, her warm smile and willing heart and hands.

She is survived by her sister: Barbara Nissley. Her brother: Wilbur (Mary Sue Derr) Nissley. Nephews: Andrew (Leah Miller) Nissley and Mathew Nissley. Grand niece and nephew: Ainsley and Everett. She was preceded in death by her sister: Sara Ann Howard and brother-in-law: Don Howard.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Habecker Mennonite Church, 451 Habecker Church Road, Lancaster on SATURDAY, JANUARY 25, 2025, at 10:30 A.M. with visitation from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. Francine M. Kauffman

Francine M. Kauffman, 86, of Lancaster Township, passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2025 at home, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of Russell J. "Jim" Kauffman with whom she celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on April 27, 2024. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Kenneth H. and Ruth Boyd McMillen.

She and her family moved to Millersville when she was a child and attended elementary school at the Normal School in Millersville and graduated from Penn Manor High School, Class of 1956. She was a member of Grace Community Church. Francine had a great sense of humor and plenty of common sense. After she married Jim, she talked him into a rundown, 1763 stone house. They spent 25 years restoring the house. She had lots of good ideas and worked alongside Jim. Francine worked many jobs to help with the bills from helping to butcher ducks, working at Graybill Electric as a lighting consultant, RCA, ALCOA and in her later years, she drove a school bus. She was a great cook and loved to entertain. Francine was very good at house decorating and design and designed two houses after they moved from the stone house. Over the years, Francine volunteered at Meals on Wheels, Zion Church kitchen, Manor Church kitchen, St. Joseph Hospital, Homestead Village Auxiliary, the Conestoga Area Historical Society and the Easter Seal Society when Mitch was a child.

Surviving in addition to her husband, one daughter-in-law: Tina Kauffman. One granddaughter: Krista (Rod) Kauffman Barlet. One great-grandson: Liam McGinnes, who brought great joy to her life. Two sisters: Marsha (Henry) Barley and Linda (the late Walter Bicking). Nieces and nephews: Jeffrey (Lori) Barley; Laurie (Dave) Foltz; Becky (Eric) Reed; Judd (Julie) Bicking and Dean (Daisy) Bicking. She was preceded in death by one son: K. Mitchell Kauffman.

Francine loved her family, including her son, his wife Tina, grandchildren and sisters.

Jimmy C. Moody

Jimmy C. Moody, 79, of West Hempfield Township, passed away at home peacefully on Thursday, December 26, 2024. He was the husband of Lynda Lou Abbitt Moody to whom he would have been married for 62 years on April 5, 2025. He was born in Newport News, Virginia, son of the late Clarence C. and Blanche Buck Moody. Jimmy was an Environmental Services Manager for Aramark for 35 years before his retirement. He was a member of Wayside Presbyterian Church and loved singing, golfing, camping, and fishing.

Surviving in addition to his wife, two daughters: Lynda Leigh Bishop, Jacksonville, FL and Tarah E. Beck, West Hempfield Township. One son: Glenn A. (Connie) Moody, Bull Gap, VA. Eight grandchildren: Caitlyn A., Hope E., Amanda J., Sara J. and Hannah N. Bishop. Samantha Beck, Robert Beck and Benjamin Moody. One brother: Edward Moody and his spouse, Roxborough, NC.

Stanley Denlinger Weidman

Stanley Denlinger Weidman, 92, of Millersville, passed away on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at home surrounded by his loving daughters. He was the husband of the late Verna M. Gerlach Weidman, who passed away in 2022. Stanley was born in Manor Township, son of the late Amos Hossler and Verdna Denlinger Weidman. He worked at Fulton Bank in the Property Management Department for 30 years before his retirement in 2004. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving during the Korean Conflict from 1953-1955, having received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Stanley and his late wife owned Weidman's Greenhouse in Central Manor for many years. He was an active member of Central Manor Church, over the years having taught Sunday School, was part of the Finance and Music Ministry Teams, played trombone with the Worship Team, and served on Church Council. He enjoyed playing his trombone and being a part of General Reynolds Band of Conestoga. He also enjoyed gardening, working in his shop creating things and being surrounded by his loving family

Stanley is survived by two daughters: Jean Long and Darlene Weidman, both of Millersville. Two grandchildren: Stanley Dean (Melissa) Weidman, Jr., Rhode Island, and Jennifer Anne Weidman, Thailand. One daughter-in-law: Linda Anne Weidman, Thailand. Three great-granddaughters: Riko, Harper and Calle Weidman. He was preceded in death by one son: Stanley D. Weidman and one brother: Eugene Denlinger Weidman.

Leah J. Ressler McMullen

Leah J. Ressler McMullen, 91, of Manor Township, passed away on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at St. Anne's Retirement Community. She was the wife of the late Gerald S. McMullen, who passed away in 2021. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Amer and Helen Ressler. Leah worked in the banking industry, was a member of Bethany Evangelical Congregation Church of Creswell and Highville Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary.

She is survived by her children: Cindy (Craig) Frey; Jeff (Barb) McMullen; Greg (Melanie) McMullen; and Cheryl (Jeff) Bitner. Nine grandchildren. Fourteen great-grandchildren and two more due in 2025. Also, two great-great-granddaughters. One daughter-in-law: Sally McMullen. One brother: Ray (Connie) Ressler. She was preceded in death by one son: Gerald McMullen and by siblings: William Ressler, Lee Ressler, Dean Ressler and Eva Kauffman.

Jennifer L. Roberts

Jennifer L. Roberts, 56, passed away on Saturday, December 14, 2024. She was born in Yonkers, NY, daughter of the late Charles F. and Janice J. Roberts and stepmother Sarah Roberts, Harrisburg. Jennifer was a very positive person through any situation. She loved going to the beach and animals. She enjoyed life and her heart was filled with laughter.

Surviving in addition to her stepmother, her companion: Maurice Hipps, Lebanon. One sister: Tammy Myers, Lancaster. Sisters: Lillian G. (Thomas) Carr and Reshetta Roberts, all of Tennessee. Several aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends. She was preceded in death by two brothers and one brother-in-law: Harry W. Myers.

Harry M. “Buddy” “Butch” Frey, Jr.

Harry M. “Buddy” “Butch” Frey, Jr., 83, of Manor Township, passed away on Monday, December 9, 2024 at Lancaster General Hospital. He was the husband of Faye K. Kise Frey, with whom he celebrated 63 years of marriage on September 30, 2024. He was born in Washington Boro, son of the late Harry M., Sr. and Verna Mae Duke Frey. 

Butch was a member of Central Manor Church, where he was a Sunday School Teacher. He was a graduate of Penn Manor High School, Class of 1958 and West Chester State Teachers College, Class of 1962. Butch was a Health and Physical Education Teacher for the Penn Manor School District and retired in 2003 after 41 years of teaching. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Butch enjoyed hunting, golfing, fishing and coaching. He was inducted into the Susquehanna Valley Hall of Fame, and the Lancaster-Lebanon Hall of Fame. He was a loving husband, Dad, granddad and great-granddad. 

Surviving in addition to his wife, one daughter: Valerie (Nelson) Breneman, Manor Township. One son: Pastor Gerald (Julie) Frey, New Providence. Five grandchildren: Aaron (Angela); Katie; Damien; Kaden and Trinity. Three great-grandchildren: Christian; Scarlet and Cheyenne. One brother: Daniel (Kathy) Frey, Elizabethtown. One brother-in-law: Jack (Diane) Dotson, Virginia. Numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his ten year old daughter, Barbara, one sister: Lorraine Dotson and one brother: Gerald Frey.

Julia K. Frey

Julia K. Frey, 69, of Mountville, passed away on Tuesday, December 3, 2024 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy. She was the wife of the late Jay M. Frey, Sr., who passed away on April 27, 2023. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late John M. and Julia Moore Kilheffer. Julia was a server at George's Pizza Castle, before her retirement. She enjoyed going to the beach at Clearwater, FL and Ocean City, NJ. Julia also enjoyed traveling, cruises, exotic animals, riding horses, country music, and cats, especially her "Precious".

Julia is survived by her sisters: Betty Huber, Manor Township; Jean (Rick) Hess, Manor Township; Linda Biswas, Somers Point, NJ. and her twin sister: June (Ted) Groff, Manor Township. Four step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren. One step-daughter: Marianne Mowrer, Manor Township. Step-daughter-in-law: Jean M. (Dane) Burnworth, Elizabethtown. She was preceded in death by her step-son: Jay M. Frey, Jr. and her brothers: John and Jay Kilheffer.

Ross W. Keene

Ross W. Keene, 72, of West Hempfield Township, passed away on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at home. He was the husband of Carol M. Herr Keene with whom he celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on July 12, 2024. Ross was born in Lancaster, son of the late J. Weaver and Glorianna Shoemaker Keene. He was a chef, having worked at various hotels in York and Lancaster Counties (1968-1994) and also Homestead Village, before his retirement. He enjoyed gardening and animals.

Surviving in addition to his wife, his children: Raymond W. (Denise) Keene, Lancaster; Amy (Mike) McMinn, Lancaster and James M. Keene, Columbia. Eight grandchildren: Ryan, Ciara, Justin, Michael, Trenton, Reylinn, Alex and Dorothy. Five great-grandchildren: Dahlia, Noah, Levi, Huxley Ross and Kaytin. One sister: Bonnie (Duane) Deardorff, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by one sister: I. Suzanne Holtzapple.

Margaret J. "Peg" Hinkle

Margaret J. "Peg" Hinkle, 90, of Columbia, took her final journey on Tuesday, December 3, 2024 at St. Anne's Retirement Community. She was born in Columbia, daughter of the late Jefferson M. and Sarah C. Noll Hinkle.

Peg was a graduate of Columbia High School, Class of 1952 and worked at the Columbia United Telephone Company until her retirement. She was a member of St Paul’s Episcopal Church in Columbia.

Peg is the last of her immediate family and is survived by a number of cousins and many friends.

Lisa J. Sharp

Lisa J. Sharp, 64, of Columbia, passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2024 at home. She was the wife of the late Richard E. Sharp, Jr. who passed away on February 6, 2021. Lisa was born in Columbia, daughter of the late Paul C., Sr. and Dorothy J. Nissley Weibley.

She is survived by her son: Richard E., III (Kayla) Sharp, Columbia. Three grandchildren: Kyli, Samantha and Richard E., IV. Brother: Randy Weibley. Sisters: Kathy Baker, Cindy Anderson and Karen Reichard. She was preceded in death by brothers: Paul, Steven and Larry Weibley.

Larry M. Shyver

Larry M. Shyver, Jr., 88, of Elizabeth Township, passed away on Wednesday, November 27, 2024 at home. He was the husband of the late Doris L. "Susie" Shyver, who passed away on April 5, 2021 and was also the companion of Joann Grube. He was born in Richlands, NC, son of the late Larry M., Sr. and Jessie Wilson Banks Shyver. Larry held various managerial positions for 38 years, and retired in 1999 as the assistant engineering manager for Alumax. He was a life member of the Southern Baptist Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing, coin collecting and antiques.

He is survived by his children: Larry M., III (Kay L.) Shyver, Mount Joy; Christina M. (Todd) Shyver-Plank, Elizabethtown; and Vernon B. (Andrea) Shyver, Mountville. Five grandchildren. Brothers: Robert (Delilah) Shyver, Kentucky and Thomas G. (Charlene) Shyver, Kansas. Sister: Linda (Jensen) Groff, Ohio. He was preceded in death by sisters: Ruth Ashley and Donna Campbell.

Dennis J. Mahan

Dennis J. Mahan, 63, of Columbia, passed away on Thursday, November 21, 2024 at home. He was the husband of the late Lizabeth A. Mahan. Denny was born in Columbia, son of the late John E. Mahan, Sr. and Ruth A. Swarr Mahan, Columbia. He worked as a laborer for Anvil International before his retirement. 

He was preceded in death by his brothers: John E., Jr., Allen and Scott Mahan.

Ruth A. Mahan

Ruth A. Mahan, 83, of Columbia, passed away on Friday, November 22, 2024. She was the wife of the late John E. Mahan, Sr. who passed away in 2006. She was born in Columbia daughter of the late Amos M., Sr. and Thelma Collier Swarr. Ruth worked as an inspector for Kahn-Lucas before her retirement. She was a member of Columbia United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star Chapter 366, Wrightsville, now Chapter 407, Elizabethtown and she enjoyed bowling.

She is survived by four granddaughters: Nichole, Laura, Jessica and Tanya. Nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sons: Scott, John E., Jr., Dennis and Allen and also two brothers and one sister.

Christopher M. Timothy

Christopher M. Timothy, 87, passed away peacefully in the loving arms of his wife, Trish, on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 at St. Anne's Retirement Community. He was born in Ardmore, son of the late Martin and Agnes Clarke Timothy. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Trish McDonnell Timothy, his six children: Patrick; Michael (husband of Klaudia); Eileen Kaht (wife of Jerry); Christopher (husband of Kari); Mary Ellen Berreth (wife of Ryan); and Kathleen. Seventeen grandchildren. Sisters: Ann Devine and Mary Fraunces. He was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph and his grandson: Brendan.

Chris was a graduate of West Catholic High School, Philadelphia. He graduated from Saint Joseph's University, Philadelphia with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Master of Arts in Education and German. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1959 and served honorably until his discharge in 1965. He spent 40 years teaching German and social studies in the public school system. Chris was very active in local government and served several terms as a township supervisor and committee chairman.

Chris was a devout Irish Catholic and a former parishioner of the Catholic churches: St. Francis (Springfield), Sts. Peter and Paul (West Chester), St. Peter's (Honey Brook), St. Benedict's (Mohnton), and St. Catherine's (Quarryville). He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus.

Chris had a strong passion for the outdoors, ranging from his vast organic vegetable gardens, his eclectic collection of farm animals, and his expert knowledge of weather patterns in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Chris loved his family, he loved his Lord, and he loved his country. He served them all faithfully every day of his life.

Christine Marie Agresta

Christine Marie Agresta, 72, of East Hempfield Township, passed away unexpectedly, on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at home. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and selflessness. She was born in Columbia, daughter of the late John G. Agresta and Margaret M. Leschke.

A graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School, Class of 1970, Christine was a dedicated and hardworking professional. She worked 13 years at ITT Grinnell as union secretary and spent 29 years as a supervisor at Scantron, Mountville, earning the respect and admiration of her colleagues for her fairness and dedication.

Christine was deeply compassionate and always ready to help others. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, who gave her time generously to her community, including volunteering with the St. Vincent de Paul Society and helping with the annual Fastnacht fundraiser. She enjoyed traveling, reading, and watching birds and deer in her yard. But above all, her greatest joy was her family, especially her grandchildren, who will always remember her unwavering love and support.

Christine is survived by her son: Frank A. Newcomer, Columbia and her daughter: Melissa A. Newcomer, Mountville. Three grandchildren, Reanna Norton, Cleveland, Ohio; and Luci and Daphne McDonald, Mountville. Sister: Barbara A. Collier, Harrisburg. Brother: George A. Leschke, Jr., Columbia. She was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret “Peggy” Deascenti, Lancaster.

Christine’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew her. She was a light in her community, a devoted mother and grandmother, and a friend to anyone in need. Her love, kindness, and compassion will never be forgotten.

Myrna E. Torres

Myrna E. Torres, 71, of Columbia, passed away on Friday, November 15, 2024 at Susquehanna Rehabilitation Health Care Center. She was the wife of the late Jose A. Medina, who passed away on May 25, 2015. She was born in Ponce, PR, daughter of the late Aurora Mercado.

Surviving are her children: Rafael L. (Maribel) Quiaroes; Jaime Garcia (Jessica Aracho Rivera) Torres; Enid (Daniel Rivera) Manley and Christian Madina (Jestinne Fry) Torres. Eleven grandchildren.

Harlan A. Redcay

Harlan A. Redcay, 78, of Mountville, passed away on Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at St. Anne's Retirement Community. He was the husband of Bernice E. Hammer Redcay, with whom he celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary on October 23, 2024. Harlan was born in Ephrata, son of the late Adam N. and Arlene Allison Redcay. He was a welder for Case New Holland for 30 years before his retirement in 2004. Harlan was a Veteran of the US Army during the Vietnam Conflict having served in Germany. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he and his wife were both active with the Relay for Life Team and was a cancer survivor, having received a bone marrow transplant in 2022. Harlan was a member of American Legion Post #466, Marietta and enjoyed bowling, skiing, bike riding, walking, fishing and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

Surviving in addition to his wife, one daughter: Angela R. (Darin) Burbrink, Richmond, VA. Two grandsons: Samuel and Maxwell. One brother: Mervin R. (Sheila) Redcay, Lickdale. One sister-in-law: Shirl Redcay. Numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother: Lynn Redcay and one sister: Dorothy Stoltzfus.

The Memorial Service will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, 1905 Broad Street, East Petersburg on Saturday, November 23, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Angela Hammer, officiating. The Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Interment will be held at a later date at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Mary L. Cantor

Mary L. Cantor, 95, of United Zion Retirement Community, passed away on Friday, November 8, 2024, at her residence. She was the wife of the late Martin "Marty" Cantor, who passed away on January 13, 2009. She was born in Port Chester, NY daughter of the late Herman and Eda Rosen Levy. She was a member of Congregation Degel Israel. Mary volunteered at Community Hospital and enjoyed plants and gardening.

She is survived by two sons and one daughter. Numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and one sister. She was preceded in death by one daughter.

Charles W. "Beetle" Bailey

With heavy hearts, the family of Charles W. "Beetle" Bailey, 78, lifelong resident of Columbia, announce his passing on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at home. He was the husband of Betty Manuel Bailey with whom he celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary on April 12, 2024. He was born in Columbia, son of the late Charles L. and Gladys Abel Bailey. Beetle worked at Burnham Boiler Corporation for 32 years before his retirement. He was a member of Columbia Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and enjoyed fishing, bowling, golfing, football, (especially the Las Vegas Raiders) and going out to eat with family and friends.

Surviving in addition to his wife are his friends.

The Memorial Service will be held at the Workman Funeral Homes, Inc., 31 South Eighth Street, Columbia on Saturday, November 16, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. David C. Powers, officiating.
